Description
Why take the Stuart Highway from Port Augusta to Alice Springs when you can explore South Australia and some lesser known amazing highlights found there?
Long Road to the Alice is an exploration of the highlights discovered on a journey between Port Augusta and Alice Springs when you take the long way. Not for us the much travelled Stuart Highway.
Instead we headed west from Port Augusta to experience many interesting features, using tracks new and familiar, ticking off bucket list items and seeing familiar places in a new and exciting way.
Our long road journey took us first to Iron Knob to learn about the history of iron ore mining. Then we moved onto Mt Ive Station with a visit to Lake Gairdner at sunset a priority. The Gawler Ranges National Park produced some intriguing highlights, of an old pastoral station and unusual rock column formations.
Our travel took us south over the sand dunes of Googs Track. Ceduna became our base during a wet period, but we managed to visit Streaky Bay where the stormy coastline provided great excitement. There were huge sand dunes at Fowlers Bay to explore, before we joined a tour at Maralinga, the site of the British atomic weapons testing.
To explore South Australia was not the only state on the list. Once on the Anne Beadell Highway we headed into Western Australia, to join the Great Central Road. Now we began coming back east. A visit to Surveyor-Generals Corner was high on our to-do list. Next we followed the Sandy Blight Junction Track to the Gary Junction Highway.
Now in Northern Territory we discovered more highlights, including Gosse Bluff, flooded Palm Valley and the beautiful Finke River Gorge. Our journey concluded in Alice Springs where we completed our long road journey.
Long Road to the Alice includes all of this and much more of our adventure. The trip was conceived and organised by Vic Widman of Great Divide Tours. Some of the tracks shown in this video also appear in Desert Highways: the Tracks of Len Beadell.
‘Brilliant as always. I am running out of superlatives for your films’
